I thought I had it, but missed it by *that* mauch...
It seems I was premature in my rejoicing over resolving whatever issue was causing my R8.5 client crash.
It continues to crash quite regularly upon startup, and I think I have narrowed it down to an application conflict.
With which process it is conflicting, I have no idea, but I believe it has something to do with the HP all-in-one drivers that are loaded on my laptop.
It's either that, or the WMIPRVSE.EXE XP process that runs in the background.
I find that if I disable these processes in Task Manager after a clean restart of my laptop, I am able to start 85. without a problem.
When I finally narrow it down, I will certainly document my findings here.
